Legion of Honour

Two Officers from the Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps French contingent receive recognition for their exemplary service.

In a world where valour and dedication often go unnoticed, the Legion of Honour (Légion d'Honneur) stands as the pinnacle of recognition, celebrating those who exhibit extraordinary commitment and achievement. This prestigious French order of merit, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, has been awarded to countless individuals who have demonstrated remarkable service to France and humanity. Among its distinguished recipients is Major Lupin, whose unwavering dedication to his work throughout his career has led him to be knighted in the order of the Legion d’Honneur.

The Legion of Honour is more than just an award; it is a symbol of excellence and patriotism. Its roots trace back to the early 19th century when Napoleon sought to create a merit-based system to reward military and civilian accomplishments. Unlike many European honours that were exclusive to nobility, the Legion of Honour was revolutionary in its inclusivity, available to anyone who displayed exceptional merit, regardless of their social standing.

The order is divided into five degrees: Chevalier (Knight), Officier (Officer), Commandeur (Commander), Grand Officier (Grand Officer), and Grand Croix (Grand Cross). Each level represents a higher degree of service and commitment, with the Grand Cross being the pinnacle of achievement. Recipients of the Legion of Honour have spanned diverse fields, including science, literature, the arts, and, of course, military service.

In the spirit of the Legion of Honour's illustrious history, Major Lupin’s award is a testament to his exceptional dedication and bravery. His career has been marked by numerous achievements, including deployments to Afghanistan, Chad,Ivory Coast, Iraq, Central African Republic, where on three occasions he was cited for bravery under enemy fire.

Major Lupin’s citation is one of relentless hard work and determination. His peers and subordinates alike commend his ability to inspire and lead, fostering a team environment that thrives on collaboration and mutual respect. Throughout his career has not only met but exceeded expectations in various challenging assignments, showing the high standards of professionalism and excellence that the Legion of Honour seeks to recognise.

The announcement of Major Lupin’s award holds special significance as it coincides with Bastille Day, France's national day celebrated on July 14th. Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a pivotal event that sparked the French Revolution. This day is a powerful symbol of liberty, democracy, and the enduring spirit of the French people.

Bastille Day celebrations are marked by grand military parades, fireworks, parties, and communal gatherings, with the largest parade taking place on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. It is a day when the values of courage, unity, and freedom are celebrated across France and around the world.

As we celebrate Bastille Day and the values it represents, Major Lupin’s receipt of the Legion of Honour reminds us of the enduring importance of dedication and service. His achievements not only highlight his personal commitment but also inspire others to strive for excellence in their respective fields. Major Lupin joins the ranks of distinguished individuals whose contributions have made a significant impact on society, embodying the very essence of the Legion of Honour.

During the ceremony Lt Col Charton was presented with the Croix du Combattant (the Combatants Cross). Enlisting in 1998 as a commissioned Officer he served in several different Regiments as a logistician.

Lt Col Charton has deployed around the world on many occasions throughout his decorated career, most notably in Mali for which he is awarded the Croix du Combattant.
