Moving your whole family to a completely new country can be a struggle for anybody – especially when it might mean fighting for your country at a moment's notice. So how do foreign soldiers based in Gloucester enjoy the Christmas period away from their family home? Troops at the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps at Imjin Barracks in Innsworth come from 21 different nations from Canada to Ghana and Albania. The base is constantly prepared to deploy across the globe for NATO, EU or coalition missions if crises erupt.

With 2017 fast approaching, preparations for NATO's rapid reaction force are coming to an end. The alliance's plan is to set up four battle groups with a total of 4,000 troops, backed up by a 40,000-strong rapid-reaction force. Forces TV has been to the Sennelager Ranges in Germany, where Britain's 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade has been preparing itself.

20th AI Brigade is the vanguard Armoured Infantry Brigade of the UK’s 3rd Division.  The ‘Iron Fist’ Brigade is in the field on Exercise NOBLE LEDGER being evaluated on the multinational Brigade’s readiness to lead full spectrum operations.  Ex NOBLE LEDGER is focussed on the Task Force Headquarters and its ability to command and control a complex Alliance operation. The headquarters comprises more than 250 personnel drawn from 14 NATO member nations. The entire exercise comprises about 350 NATO personnel including exercise control.

During the last 15 years, servicemen and women of many militaries throughout Europe and the world have learned the art of war fighting in the streets, mountains, cities and deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom and the NATO International Security Assistance Force mission, respectively. Those lessons learned in combat returned to dictate training to the next generation of war fighters and has led to some of the most battle-tested military formations in decades.

The servicemen and women of Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps participated in several remembrance events from 11-14 Nov in their home of Gloucestershire. Beginning Friday, they held a ceremony of remembrance and two minutes silence in honour of Armistice Day at Imjin Barracks, 11 Nov 2016.

The Allied Rapid Reaction Corps was signed 'certified' to be the Land Component Command of the 2017 NATO Response Force on Wednesday, 2 Nov 16, by senior NATO officers at RAF St. Mawgan in Cornwall, UK, at the conclusion of Exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE 2016.

The day full of briefings was informative and gave the students some real-world experience to go along with what they learn in the classroom. This is the fourth year students from Exeter have visited the ARRC and this year, after they were introduced to the unit and exercise scenario, they were given briefings on planning, logistics, strategic communication and situational understanding.

As a collection of 28 nations across the globe, the members of NATO face a unique challenge during any exercise or operation: communication. As the NATO mission set has expanded, its units need to become quicker and more adaptable to the changing world. HQ ARRC is one of NATO’s High Readiness Forces (Land) on the forefront of that quick adaptability. With Joint Force Command Naples, participating from Italy, Exercise Trident Juncture 16, October 23 – November 4, at RAF St. Mawgan, UK, is to certify the servicemen and women of the ARRC as the NATO Response Force Land Component Command in 2017.

Rt. Hon. Secretary of State for Defence Sir Michael Fallon KCB visited the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps at RAF St. Mawgan, as they kicked off exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE 16, Oct. 24, 2016. The exercise will certify the ARRC as a NATO Land Forces HQ in preparation for its role as part of the NATO Response Force in 2017.
